And so we are almost done with the first month of 2018. I can’t believe that this time last year I was busy planning and organizing a relocation from Australia to the US. Luckily, 2018 started much slower with no major life changes… 🙂
When it comes to beauty, I’ve been enjoying some interesting products – some new, others rediscovered in my makeup drawers. Skincare-wise it was all about rich and nourishing textures to combat negative effects of the colder weather. Shall we have a closer look?
Let’s start from the most unexpected favorite – the Fenty Beauty foundation. It’s surprising because a matte, long wearing formulas don’t usually agree with my skin at all. This one looks really great. The shade 150 matches my skin tone (and the undertone) perfectly at the moment and the finish on the skin is flawless. It doesn’t emphasize any dryness or pores and covers the imperfections almost well enough to skip concealer.
I do enjoy the fuller coverage (I’d say medium to full) these days, especially when it looks fresh, even at the end of the day. The Pro Filt’r foundation stays matte and doesn’t move or cling to drier areas overtime. I like to pair it with a moisturizing primer (like the Smashbox Primerizer) and make sure to use a spritz of Primer Water at the end of my makeup and 1-2 times during the day. Seems high maintenance, but it really isn’t – just check my YSL All Hours Foundation review to see how many steps I have to go through to make it work 🙂
Another bonus of the Fenty Beauty foundation is a reasonable price tag, considering the quality. I will definitely get a full size when my sample runs out.
What a great new release from Maybelline. I’ve been using the Total Temptation mascara on a daily basics for a couple of weeks now and it’s a strong contender to reach my ultimate top 5. It’s a lovely product for those of you who look for separation and good definition with just one coat. This mascara is not extremely volumizing but will flare out your lashes like no other. On me, it looks almost as good as falsies.
The consistency is perfect from the word go and I’m even enjoying the wand, which I wasn’t expecting after opening the tube for the first time. The mascara has a faint scent – a bit odd but to be honest, I only noticed it after reading someone’s comment about it on Instagram. It may be an issue for those of you with sensitive eyes, personally, I haven’t experienced any issues.
Back to the positives, the mascara looks great throughout the day, doesn’t smudge and holds the curl pretty well. I even had a bit of a cry one day and it didn’t run on first contact with tears. If you do have watery eyes, you may want to go for the waterproof version though. Overall, it’s a great product with a friendly price tag, highly recommend!
I got this one in this month’s BoxyCharm and have been using it every day since then. It’s the most unflattering cool toned grey-ish pink on me (I believe the shade is called Dusty Taro), but it’s ok, since I only wear it around the house. It’s not too opaque and I can get away with using it without looking too scary… Why do I like this product then? Because it keeps my lips more hydrated than most of my lip balms!
The Grande Lips Plumper contains hylauronic acid and I believe that’s why it’s so effective. As for the plumping effect, I haven’t really noticed a massive impact yet, but I’m very curious to see if it’s going to increase the volume and firmness of my lips in 30 days. It’s a big claim, but so far I’ve definitely noticed a huge difference in softness and hydration levels. I was a bit worried that the tingling sensation will be too difficult to handle, but I can barely feel it. It would be great if the shade was more wearable on me, but I can look past it since it’s such a miracle worker. I may just get a colourless version when I’m done with this one…
Now let’s talk about skincare… The Emma Hardie oil has been my life savior over the past three months. Winter can really wreak havoc on my complexion so I need to go in with something rich and nourishing. The Brilliance Oil is just that – a heavy and oily serum that doesn’t sink in immediately. It’s probably a deal breaker for those of you with oily skin, I love that feeling and honestly, I’ve been probably using more than a recommended amount per application.
Interestingly enough, once you apply a night cream over the top, the sticky feeling disappears very quickly, so that’s something to keep in mind. I think the Emma Hardie Oil will be too rich for warmer months, but I can see myself reaching for it again this time next year. I can even forgive the brand for discontinuing my favorite night cream… no, actually the wound is still too fresh… 😉 Either way, if you’re looking for a great nourishing facial oil, this one is worth considering.
The star of my morning skincare routine is this gem from Philosophy. I adore the rich consistency of this cream and how it instantly transform my skin into smooth, even canvas for makeup. Unlike the Emma Hardie oil, this one sinks in within minutes and doesn’t roll or flake off when you layer other products on top. It provides an instant comfort to the skin, which I particularly enjoy since the firming serum I currently use in the morning can sometimes leave my skin feeling a bit tight.
The cream has a faint, pleasant scent that doesn’t linger for long after application. It also contains an SPF15 (interestingly enough, in the US it’s SPF30), which I find sufficient for this time of year in Texas. The only downside would be the price, but you’re getting 60ml instead of the usual 50. Would I pick this one over the Algenist cream I mentioned in my Christmas gift guide? I’m not sure at this stage, but I will certainly enjoy it while it lasts!
Did you discover anything worth mentioning in January? Don’t be shy – share the love in the comments 🙂
