Happy New Year everyone… It’s been a while (well, a year ;)) since the last post and I apologize for my unannounced absence. I didn’t plan it that way but ended up having a bit of a social media/blogging detox and just dedicating all my time to the family. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a fantastic start to the New Year.
Today I want to close up 2017 with my best beauty picks of the year. These are either products released in the past 12 months or just staples in my collection. Mostly makeup, interestingly enough, but I also managed to sneak in some great hair care, skincare and body care recommendations.
Who’s ready for 2017 beauty favorites?
Pureology Root Lift
I talked about this product in one of the recent blog posts and I stand by every word. It’s the most amazing hair volumizer I’ve ever used. The difference it makes in the root area is tremendous and you don’t need a lot of product to achieve visible results. Root Lift also features a very convenient applicator which can be used in a targeted way or to dispense the product throughout the larger area.
The only drawback is that it’s a bit pricey, but well worth the money, in my opinion. Definitely in my top 3 discoveries of 2017.
Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Body Mist
Next we have a fairly new product in my collection, but it has made its way to my heart and the favorites post after just one use. The Sol de Janeiro Body Mist smells divine, warm and just sweet enough to make you think of a tropical getaway. The scents lingers on the body for hours and you will smell it on your clothes for much longer. I’ve been using it pretty much every day for the last few months and the usage so far is minimal.
I said it before, but it’s worth noting again that in my opinion, it’s the best value for money out of the entire Sol de Janeiro range, if you’re interested in familiarizing yourself with their signature scent.
Skinstitut L-Lactic Cleanser
I’ve enjoyed a lot of skincare products in 2017 but the one that stands out the most is the Skinstitut L-Lactic Cleanser (followed by their serum). It’s interesting because it’s not the most exciting product out there, but it has made a huge difference in the condition of my skin. I feel like when used regularly it keeps my complexion pimple free, clear and youthful looking.
The cleanser has a faint, passion fruit scent and contains vitamin E, raspberry fruit extract, lactic acid and soybean oil, to name a few ingredients. It lathers well, rinses off easily and goes a long way. I really recommend you check it out especially since the price is not going to scare you away.
Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation
I have a dedicated review of this product so let’s just do a quick summary here. It’s been my go to foundation ever since it’s release and in 2017 it has proven to be all I need for almost every occasion. When I was traveling for three months while moving countries, the luggage limitations allowed me to only pack one foundation and i picked MUFE Water Blend. It’s been with me through both humid and hot and cold weather and works best in every condition.
I also feel like I can wear it regardless of the condition of my skin at the time and it always looks good. It’s a sheer coverage product which means that it needs to be paired with a concealer, but the finish on the skin is beautiful and very natural. Check my full review for more tips on how to make it look amazing.
Fenty Beauty Highlighter
Fenty Beauty has been all the talk in 2017, and for a good reason. I’ve tried a bunch of items from the brand so far and haven’t really been disappointed with their quality. But the product I keep on reaching for over and over again is the Metal Moon Highlighter. It has became my staple to use on top of the cheekbones as well as in the inner corner of the eyes. It’s a lovely pale gold shade that’s subtle yet makes an impact. Great for those of you who don’t necessarily want to go the blinding route in a highlighter department, but prefer to opt for something more subdued.
I feel I’ve abandoned my other highlighting products, but this one just meets all my needs and I have to force myself to put it away…
MAC Warm Soul Blush
I could probably mention at least 5 standout blushes from 2017, but the one I actually used the most is MAC Warm Soul. It’s just such a perfect shade that goes with everything, a true no-brainer of the makeup world. The pigmentation is perfect even for the heavy handed but you don’t have to layer it up too much either.
It stays on for hours and looks as fresh as it was when you first applied it. And since it’s a baked blush, you’ll have to use it for months to even make a dent. To be quite honest, the shade is not really that unique, but there’s something special about Warm Soul and there’s a reason why it’s a staple for so many people. Definitely a product worth investing in.
Lorac Pro 3 palette
Next we have a second time winner and and a fantastic basic eyeshadow palette. I love the selection of colors in the Lorac Pro 3 and the quality is superb as always (although the Lorac formula does have a bit of kick-up). I’ve actually hit pan on one of the colors already and I’m very deep into another one as well – that’s not something that happens often for an eyeshadow palette hoarder.
It was the palette I took travelling with me and it allowed me to create a variety of natural looks as well as darker, going out combinations. If you’re into your neutrals but like to venture into a bit of color and smoky eyes every now and then, this palette is perfect. With sixteen shades and a great balance of matte and shimmer finishes, you can have a lot of makeup fun with Lorac Pro 3.
Morphe Jaclyn Hill Palette
If $44 USD is a bit too much for you, the Morphe Jaclyn Hill Palette is certainly the way to go. It’s a bit cheaper and includes 35 eyeshadows, so double the amount comparing to Lorac. I wasn’t really that impressed with the previous releases from Morphe, but this one is a hit. The shadows are soft, pigmented and easy to blend. Great selection of neutrals and interesting pops of blue and purple to mix it up a little.
I feel like it’s the only eyeshadow palette you need if you’re a beginner and even the makeup fanatics would enjoy the quality and versatility of this one. Definitely one of the best releases of 2017. Read my full review here.
Colourpop Ultra Satin Lips
Another second year winner here. Since the matte lip trend is here to stay, it’s good to have one formula that works, even for textured lips. Ultra Satin Lips from Colourpop don’t ever get to the crusty and dry matte finish, but maintain the longevity of those type of products. My collection is probably excessive, but it’s the formula I reach for when I want to do my makeup and forget it’s there. There’s barely any maintenance on those (unless it’s a really bright or dark shade) and they look good even after eating or drinking.
My favorite shades at the moment include November, Bare Necessities and the recently released collab with Kathleen Lights – Dreamy. The price is very budget friendly and there’s a bunch of great shades to choose from.
Milani Eyeshadow Primer
Lastly, let’s talk about the only eyeshadow primer I used this year, from Milani. I already know that I will certainly keep repurchasing it in the future because it’s extremely affordable and performs just as well or even better than higher end lid primers. Eyeshadows maintain their intensity throughout the day and don’t move around at all when applied over the Milani base. You only need a tiny amount per lid and it blends out beautifully – no rolling or sticking to drier areas you may have.
I also occasionally use this primer under the eyes to prevent the concealer from creasing, and it does the job just fine. There’s really nothing else you can ask for, right?
